THE PREDICTION
World number four Dominic Thiem was impressive enough on his return to the tour at the Madrid Open following a month away but came up against an immovable object in the semi-finals, losing to eventual champion Alexander Zverev in straight sets. The Austrian making the last four after a month out via some strong wins over Alex de Minaur and John Isner is excellent progress and he should be even better this week at an altitude in Rome that favours the clay-court specialists far more than Madrid. 27-year-old Thiem has struggled at the Italian Open in recent seasons, losing at the first hurdle in his last two, but this time around he should be fresher than usual come this time of the year and he was the winner the last time he faced Marton Fucsovics on clay at the Hamburg Open in 2019. World number 44 Fucsovics will put up a dogged fight but Thiem on clay should be a trial too high for the Hungarian right now. Take Thiem to take this one, probably in two.
