THE PREDICTION
31-year-old Kei Nishikori has been waiting a long time to take to court again after his first round win over Fabio Fognini on Monday, with Pablo Carreno Busta pulling out of their second round fixture. The Japanese star is unlucky to draw world number six Alexander Zverev for a second week running after losing in straight sets last Wednesday as part of the German’s route to the Madrid Open title and more of the same could take place here. Whilst Nishikori will have recent experience to draw on, and Zverev’s game was far better suited to the altitude of Madrid to here in Rome, the 24-year-old is flying right now. Zverev beat Hugo Dellien in straight sets on Thursday with little fuss and with that settling him into the Italian Open he will be immensely tough to knock out this week. Nishikori trails 3-1 in their head-to-head record but he will be handful on Thursday and so taking Zverev to win this outright is advisable rather than straight sets.
