THE PREDICTION
World number 33 Lorenzo Sonego claimed one of the biggest wins of his career late on Thursday night by beating world number four Dominic Thiem over three tight sets. The Italian will be loving the support from limited crowds here in Rome and now that Matteo Berrettini is out of the draw he will garner most of it. 26-year-old Sonego finished runner-up to Andrey Rublev at the end of his breakthrough week last year, at the Vienna Open, after shocking Novak Djokovic in blistering straight sets en-route to the final. World number seven Rublev looked far more composed than we have seen for a while on Thursday in beating world number 11 Roberto Bautista Agut via straight sets and the Russian will be feeling more confident for it. Sonego’s defeat of Thiem was excellent but the Austrian has been struggling for his best form all week and Rublev with the bit between his teeth is possibly harder to oust. This match could go any which way but take Rublev to win at least a set here for a safe option from a likely fierce match.
