World number one Ashleigh Barty came back from an early break to beat Veronika Kudermetova handily in straight sets and reach a previously unlikely quarter-final clash with Coco Gauff. World number 35 Gauff was exceptional in a two-set slog against last Sunday’s Madrid Open champion Aryna Sabalenka with the 17-year-old keeping a cool well beyond her years to oust the feisty Belarusian. One of the biggest wins of Gauff’s career could evolve into something extraordinary on Friday in this first meeting between these two players. Gauff went on to play Women’s Doubles alongside Kudermetova later on Thursday and perhaps the American will have some insider info ahead of this spectacle sure to bring the limited crowds flocking. The majority of support will be for the teenager here but 25-year-old Barty is more than capable of shutting out the noise. The likeliest this match looks set to fall is in three given how well Gauff has beaten Sabalenka, and Maria Sakkari before her, but take the Aussie to win outright here to be on the safe side.
