World number 55 Tommy Paul will feel aggrieved to have picked Roberto Bautista Agut so soon after their first meeting in the second round of last month’s Monte-Carlo Masters. The 23-year-old lost in straight sets that day and there is little to suggest he will fare any better here in Rome, even though he took the first set against Andrey Rublev last week in Madrid before eventual defeat. Paul is better than his current form but then again so is RBA, as the world number 11 will have been disappointed to lose to John Isner last week in the second round by such fine margins. 33-year-old Bautista Agut very rarely falls at the first hurdle and has made it to the second round in every Masters campaign since 2019 so this would be a upset should Paul come through. The American is capable of forcing a decider but the likeliest outcome here is another straight-sets victory for the Spaniard.
