Marin Cilic and Alexander Bublik will meet in the first round of the Italian Open for a second year running after Cilic came back from behind to beat Bublik in three sets last September. 32-year-old Cilic missed out on the Madrid Open last week after losing in the semi-finals of the Estoril Open to Cam Norrie the week before but the Croatian has been all over the place form-wise this season. That makes for an unpredictable tie with the tour’s most unpredictable player in 23-year-old Bublik. The Kazakh is coming off a superb performance in Madrid last week where he reached the quarter-finals via three great wins over Marton Fucsovics, Denis Shapovalov and Aslan Karatsev to extend an impressive 19-12 record for 2021. World number 40 Bublik should probably win this second meting between the two on form but that is not often how it works with this exciting maverick. It is safer, then, to opt for Bublik to win at least a set and perhaps you could take at least one tiebreak in this match as an addition or an alternative.
