World number 90 Gianluca Mager is the lowest-ranked Italian wildcard in a congested field of home players for the limited Rome crowds to support but the 26-year-old can be a handful on this surface, with a memorable defeat of Dominic Thiem last season. However, he faces 22-year-old Alex de Minaur for a first time in a particularly difficult first round tie and the Aussie has been playing well for someone who has not made it past the round of 16 on clay yet this season. De Minaur has lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas and Dominic Thiem in his last two tournaments in some high-quality matches but he should have more than enough to come through here. A potential fight-back from Mager cannot be ruled out in front of a home crowd but the Aussie is usually fast out of the blocks so take De Minaur to win the first set and the match here instead of opting for sets.
