THE PREDICTION
31-year-old Sorana Cirstea won just her second ever WTA title earlier this year at the Istanbul Open almost 11 years after her first in Tashkent in 2008 but the Romanian has struggled with fitness since. A small amount of good fortune sees the world number 61 in the semi-finals here after she played exceptionally well to beat Venus Williams and Shuai Zhang and then received a walkover to this stage after Bianca Andreescu pulled out of their quarter-final. This leaves Cirstea the much better rested player ahead of a fourth career meeting with Magda Linette and the Romanian leads their head-to-head record 2-1 with this their first match on clay. Strasbourg’s eight seed Linette has claimed three confident straight-sets wins to reach this stage and the Pole is possibly the favourite here on her performances this week. However, Cirstea’s extra rest and motivation having avoided the top seed should see her win at least a set in this one.
