Strasbourg’s fifth seed Barbora Krejcikova took out Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets on Thursday to set out her stall as the highest-ranking seed left in the draw. The world number 38 has never won a WTA title but if she can overcome the strong sudden form of 21-year-old Jule Niemeier on Friday she looks the possible favourite to claim her first. However, world number 216 Niemeier is yet to drop a set this campaign and wins over Shelby Rogers and Arantxa Rus are impressive indeed. The German has spent the majority of the season on the ITF circuit but could be about to reach her first WTA final and that motivation looks likely to see three sets required in this semi-final.
