THE LOWDOWN
World number 52 Tereza Martincova beat Ashlyn Krueger in straight sets on Wednesday to reach the second round of Indian Wells on her debut. The 26-year-old has been in impressive form in recent months with stand-out wins over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Jelena Ostapenko contributing to five quarter-finals reached since June. Martincova lost to Barbora Krejcikova in the final of the Prague Open back in July. World number seven Elina Svitolina won the Chicago Ladies Open back in August ahead of a strong run through to the quarter-finals of the US Open, where she closely lost to Leylah Fernandez.
THE PREDICTION
27-year-old Elina Svitolina is the fourth seed at Indian Wells and as a three-time Masters event champion she has a strong pedigree for success this week. The Ukrainian is an excellent all-courter and former WTA Finals champion capable of winning this tournament but she has yet to fully convince this season on court despite winning a 16th title in Chicago. There is the faintest scent of an upset in this second round meeting, the first between the two, especially as Martincova has been impressive in recent weeks. Svitolina to win outright is the safest option here but taking the Czech to snatch at least a set could be a shrewd move.
