World number 96 Su-Wei Hsieh looked confident in a straight-sets victory over Madison Brengle on Wednesday to reach the second round at Indian Wells for a fourth time. The Chinese Taipei star won the Women’s Doubles event with Elise Mertens back in July and plays alongside her friend again here in California, with their campaign as the second seeds starting soon after this match. World number 29 Jelena Ostapenko won the Eastbourne International earlier this season for her fourth career WTA title. The 24-year-old won Roland-Garros in 2017 on her favoured clay but she has also been a Masters finalist on hardcourts having finished runner-up at the 2018 Miami Open.
THE PREDICTION
35-year-old Su-Wei Hsieh beat Kim Clijsters last week at the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic and her performance against Madison Brengle on Wednesday was assured. Furthermore, the former world number 23 has beaten Ostapenko in both of their previous meetings at the 2016 Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2019. However, Ostapenko looks set to secure a first win over the veteran with her recent run to the Luxembourg Open final showing enough form to likely overpower her opponent this time around.
