THE LOWDOWN
World number 40 Sorana Cirstea just sneaks through to the second round of Indian Wells as the 32nd seed in California after one of her best seasons on tour. The 31-year-old won her first WTA title for 13 years at the Istanbul Open earlier this year to make it two overall so far and she has impressed in spells throughout the season, most notably in beating Victoria Azarenka at Wimbledon back in July. She faces world number 109 Misaki Doi after the 30-year-old beat Ann Li in three sets on Wednesday to reach the second round for only the second time. Doi reached a career-high 30th in the WTA world rankings in 2016 a year after claiming her only title to date at the Luxembourg Open.
THE PREDICTION
Sorana Cirstea’s 2021 season has been surprisingly strong and she will be confident of making a good start in Indian Wells against an opponent she has beaten three times before. The Romanian made it 3-0 in their head-to-head record at the Madrid Open back in 2017, where Misaki Doi won her only set yet in their meetings. Cirstea has been pretty consistent against lower-ranked players this year and her seeding at a Masters event should motivate her to a straight-sets victory here.
