World number 68 Arantxa Rus is not far from her career-high WTA ranking at 61st she achieved way back in 2012. The former Junior number one conceded just one game in a straight-sets obliteration of Alycia Parks on Wednesday to reach the second round of Indian Wells for the first time. Seventh seed Petra Kvitova is playing her last tournament of the season to gain some extra rest ahead of 2022 after a campaign largely upset by injuries. The 31-year-old still managed to win a title this year at the Qatar Open to set her career total at 28 WTA titles, including two Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon.
THE PREDICTION
30-year-old Rus will face former world number one Petra Kvitova for the first time in their long careers here and she will never have a better chance at beating the Czech. World number 11 Kvitova has been hard to pin down form-wise for several months now due to some niggling injuries and with one eye on a well-deserved rest it remains to be seen how she will perform in California. The likelihood is she still wins this comfortably but Rus is playing well enough to opt only for the outright win for Kvitova.
