THE LOWDOWN
World number 54 Magda Linette reached a career-high 33rd in the world last February and she will have suffered the consequences of a suspended season more than most in that form. The 29-year-old has reached a couple of semi-finals this year and a WTA 500 event quarter-final with some strong performances scattered throughout the year. World number 32 Victoria Azarenka has dropped a significant amount of places in recent weeks to currently sit at 32nd in the world but she si too good to stay there for long. The two-time Grand Slam champion pulled out of the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic round of 16 last week and it remains to be seen how fit she is in the second round here.
THE PREDICTION
Azarenka concede just three games to Linette back in 2016 at the Miami Open when the Belarussian was at the height of her powers. Towards the end of this season the former world number one has begun to look slightly fragile in moments that suggest this second meeting five years later could be a much closer test. Linette has challenged some top players this season, including a stunning win over Elina Svitolina at Wimbledon back in July, but beating Azarenka would be one of the best of her career. Azarenka’s fitness is questionable as things stand after her pulling out of Chicago last week but taking her as the outright winner seems a suitable compromise.
