World number 28 Leylah Fernandez is playing her first tournament since a stunning run to the US Open final ended in bittersweet defeat to fellow teenager Emma Raducanu. The Canadian put in some stellar performances in New York and certainly took out the tougher opponents on her way to that famous final in Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber, Elina Svitolina and Aryna Sabalenka. She will receive a hero’s welcome at Indian Wells on her debut and is definitely someone to watch here, there and everywhere for year’s to come. World number 64 Alize Cornet faces the unwelcome prospect of tackling Fernandez and the likely partisan crowd in the second round after taking out Elena-Gabriela Ruse in straight sets on Wednesday. The 31-year-old almost cracked the top 10 over a decade ago and she has six WTA titles to her name so far.

Alize Cornet upset a Canadian star back in July when she beat Bianca Andreescu in straight sets in the first round of Wimbledon and the popular Frenchwoman should not be underestimated. However, Leylah Fernandez proved time and again at the US Open that if she is pushed she can push back harder and she should enjoy the occasion in California as one of a few new darlings of the tennis world. This being her first match since a defeat in a first Grand Slam final, the wisest move is for an outright win instead of a probable straight-sets victory.
