THE LOWDOWN
World number 61 Irina-Camelia Begu beat Fiona Ferro in straight sets to reach the second round of Indian Wells for a fifth time. The 31-year-old has only made it to the third round once before, where she lost to Karolina Pliskova in 2017. Begu has four WTA titles to her name so far, wither last coming on home soil at the Bucharest Open in 2017. 24-year-old Jil Teichmann has won two WTA titles before this year but a prolonged stretch of good form saw the Swiss reach a career-high 38th in the world last week. Teichmann beat Naomi Osaka, Belinda Bencic and Karolina Pliskova on her way to the Cincinnati Open final back in August before losing to Ash Barty.
THE PREDICTION
Begu won the most recent meeting between the two at Roland-Garros last season over three sets but that levelled their head-to-head record at 1-1 after Teichmann won the first encounter a year earlier at the Bol Open. Both of their matches have come on clay so far but a hardcourt tie is likely to suit Teichmann more than Begu here. Still, it is worth noting that the Romanian won the Indian Wells Challenger event here last season so the 31-year-old knows how to win in California. Teichmann’s exploits in Cincinnati en route to a first Masters final suggests she is the favourite here and the Swiss could be one to watch if the draw is kind to her.
