World number 22 Emma Raducanu’s summer has been nothing short of a whirlwind. The 18-year-old became the first qualifier to win the US Open in the history of the tournament to build on her emphatic breakthrough performance at Wimbledon back in July. Her tour-level win record of 10-3 upon defeating Leylah Fernandez in the final last month is surely the least amount of tour experience by any Grand Slam champion in the history of the sport and it remains to be seen if she can continue in that vein or struggle with the expectations set upon her here in Indian Wells. Facing her will be world number 100 Aliaksandra Sasnovich, who made short work of Maria Camila Osorio Serrano to earn the chance to play a match the whole tennis world will be watching.
THE PREDICTION
It is difficult to measure Raducanu’s success against what we have seen with other players coming off their first Grand Slam win. The teenager’s story is exceptional and by all accounts, including her own, she is ready to push on where so many have faltered and struggled. Recently we have seen the likes of Jelena Ostapenko, who also won her first ever singles title at a Grand Slam at Roland-Garros in 2017, struggle to maintain that level until years later. However, until Raducanu takes to court on Friday she deserves the benefit of the doubt. Before she won the US Open her level at Wimbledon was enough to suggest she can win this match and so that is the expectation. Seeing as it is her first match back since her life changed forever, taking her as outright winner seems wise even though she should do this in two. Watch this Indian Wells crowd carry her as far as they possibly can.
