THE LOWDOWN
An all Kazakh tie in the second round should be an interesting watch at Indian Wells between world number 16 Elena Rybakina and number 43 Yulia Putintseva. 22-year-old Rybakina received a bye to the second round as the 13th seed in what has been her most consistent season on tour so far despite both her WTA titles coming in previous years. She reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros back in June and backed that up with a run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon. 26-year-old Putintseva won her second WTA title recently at the Hungarian Grand Prix but she will be disappointed to have lost in the Astana Open final on home soil last week.
THE PREDICTION
Yulia Putintseva beat Andrea Petkovic in an impressive first round display on Wednesday to set-up a second meeting with fellow Kazakh Elena Rybakina. Putintseva was the winner of their previous meeting in three tight sets at the Italian Open last year on her favoured clay surface and she is in great form right now. Rybakina should be able to level the scores on a hard court that suits her power game best but Putintseva’s form is enough to suggest an outright win for the younger Kazakh is the wisest move.
