World number 10 Belinda Bencic reached a career-high fourth in the world last February before the pandemic forced a cruel season suspension. She has since made up for lost time with an unforgettable week at the Tokyo Olympics, where she won Women’s Singles Gold and Doubles Silver. Both she and next opponent Shelby Rogers fell to the unstoppable force that was Emma Raducanu’s US Open title-winning campaign in New York and this will be an interesting face-off. World number 44 Rogers reached a career-high 40th in the world back in July and the American will be well-backed at Indian Wells this week.
THE PREDICTION
Bencic leads a head-to-head record 3-1 with Shelby Rogers, with the American taking their first meeting eight years ago and the Swiss racking up three-straight wins in Beijing, Mallorca and back in August at the Cincinnati Open. The 24-year-old’s retirement from the quarter-finals of the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic last week looks more like precaution than an injury issue but the possibility of fitness problems means leaving this out of an accumulator is wise. Bencic won in straight sets in Cincinnati but Rogers is well capable of forcing a decider here so an outright win is the wisest move.
