THE LOWDOWN
23-year-old Soonwoo Kwon moved up to a career-high 56th in the ATP world rankings after winning the first title of his career at the Astana Open two weeks ago. The South Korean has been threatening something like this form for much of the summer, with a run to the Eastbourne International semi-finals a memorable campaign, and he appears to possess a difficult game for opponents to work out. World number 80 Guido Pella won his only ATP title to date back in 2019, where the Argentine enjoyed a breakthrough season on tour to reach his career-high 20th ATP world ranking. The 31-year-old has struggled with his fitness for much of this year but he has tested the likes of Matteo Berrettini when able as well as beating Fabio Fognini and David Goffin at the Cincinnati Open last month.
THE PREDICTION
This is yet another tricky first round match to pick with Kwon coming off the highs of a first title win that can either help, or more often hinder, a player at their next tournament. What is more, Guido Pella has won both of their previous meetings and both on hardcourts at the Los Cabos Open and Antwerp Open in 2019. If Pella is moving well he should be backed to win at least a set here as the likelier winner, mostly because Soonwoo Kwon will be tackling the title-winning curse for a first time.
