29-year-old Marton Fucsovics reached a career-high 31st in the world back in 2019 but he has in places played some his best tennis this season. The Hungarian reached the final of the ATP 500 event in Rotterdam before defeat to much-faced rival Andrey Rublev earlier this year before returning the favour at Wimbledon, beating Rublev to reach the quarter-finals at a Grand Slam for the first time. He faces world number 73 Gianluca Mager, who enjoyed a run to the quarter-finals at the Sofia Open last week with two strong wins over Adrian Mannarino and Miomir Kecmanovic.
THE PREDICTION
Marton Fucsovics’ 2021 was shaping up to be something special for the ‘Iron Man of tennis’ but he is riding a four-match losing streak into Indian Wells. He has clearly struggled to cope with the emotion of reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals, with just one win on tour since then. In normal service he could be backed to comfortably best Gianluca Mager but the Italian’s performance in Hungary last week suggests he could overcome the Hungarian number one. Take Mager to win at least a set as the likelier man to come through here.
