THE LOWDOWN

This is a pretty enticing looking first round match between world number 37 Marketa Vondrousova and Viktorija Golubuc, with both players enjoying strong performances this summer. Both players received a Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games, with former Roland-Garros finalist Vondrousova losing in the Women’s Singles final to Belinda Bencic, who partnered Golubic for Switzerland to win the Women’s Doubles Gold later that same day. 22-year-old Vondrousova has since reached two semi-finals at the Luxembourg Open and last week’s Chicago Fall Tennis Classic but she pulled out of the latter with an injury that could yet trouble her at Indian Wells.

THE PREDICTION

This first meeting between the two is one of the more higher-ranked scraps of the first round and if Vondrousova remains fit she looks the favourite to come through. 28-year-old Golubic enjoyed great success on the grass swing, with a run to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon a notable achievement, but a fit and firing Vondrousova is likely too powerful for the Swiss to beat. Take the Czech to reach the second round but leave this out of an accumulator with her fitness questionable.
