26-year-old Mackenzie McDonald could be one to watch at Indian Wells this year as a Californian likely to be backed well on home soil and at a career-high 57th in the world. His run to the Washington Open final back in August saw impressive wins over Nick Kyrgios, Ilya Ivashka and Kei Nishikori before he lost to Jannik Sinner in three sets and his performances have been exceptional at Grand Slams this season. McDonald faces world number 55 James Duckworth in a similar position. The Aussie is also at his career-best ranking after recently making the Astana Open final and the round of 16 at the Canadian Open back in August where he beat the aforementioned Sinner en route.
THE PREDICTION
This could be a sleeper hit in the first round at Indian Wells between two players with fairly similar careers right now. Both are at their best ATP world ranking, and separated by just the one place at that, after enjoying strong seasons in 2021 and both are known for their battling spirit – especially over five sets. McDonald is especially hard to get past the longer a match goes but he should have that extra motivation here in front of a home crowd that may never have been so behind him as right now. In the likelihood that this match sees three sets, take McDonald to earn at least one as the likelier of two capable winners.
