Former world number one Kim Clijsters will draw a huge crowd at Indian Wells as a two-time former champion here and legend of the modern game. Clijsters has retired several times but her most recent comeback came seven years after her departure after the 2012 US Open in 2020 and was unfortunately halted by the pandemic. She holds the Open Era record for Grand Slam titles won as a mother, with three of her four major titles won as a parent, and she became the first mother to reach world number one in 2011 after claiming her most recent Grand Slam title in Melbourne. World number 53 Katerina Siniakova is a three-time Grand Slam winner too in Women’s Doubles alongside Barbora Krejcikova and their success this season at Roland-Garros has served as a springboard for her own improved performances on tour. The Czech reached the Bad Homburg Open final on grass back in June and she beat Garbine Muguruza at the Canadian Open more recently for a season’s-best win.
THE PREDICTION
Kim Clijsters is an International Tennis Hall of Famer with a total of 41 WTA titles behind her, many of which have come on US soil. Her best performances have come on the North American hardcourt swing and this first round match will be a huge litmus test for what is possible this week in California. The 38-year-old will be a tough opponent, and tougher occasion, for 25-year-old Katerina Siniakova to handle here and a likely partisan crowd should help Clijsters to at least a set. Leave this one out of an accumulator as a one-off spectacle unlikely to follow form.
