THE LOWDOWN
World number 60 Kaia Kanepi fell foul of Leylah Fernandez’s storming run to the US Open final last month after a decent win over Yulia Putintseva in the first round. The Estonian veteran is at her best on the clay but her career is certainly winding down now with the last of her four WTA titles coming in 2013. Kanepi has made the third round at Indian Wells once before. She faces former US Open finalist Madison Keys in a tough early draw but the world number 50 recently pulled out of a match at the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic and her fitness could be a concern. If the 26-year-old is able to play to her best ability she will be one to avoid in these early rounds as a former Masters winner on US soil. The American won the 2019 Cincinnati Open for the most recent of her five WTA titles, the last three of which have all come in the US.
THE PREDICTION
Keys and Kanepi have faced-off twice before with a win apiece so far, although their last match came over four years ago at the 2017 US Open where the American won in straight sets. On home soil and in the better form of the two, albeit with some concern over her fitness, it is hard to see Keys not winning this first round match. It should be a robust one, with Kanepi likely to try and make her opponent run for everything in hope of a retirement but take the American to win outright.
