World number 49 Frances Tiafoe has not played a match since losing in four sets to Felix Auger-Aliassime in the round of 16 at the US Open last month. For a player so capable in front of big American crowds, it is surprising to find that 23-year-old Frances Tiafoe has lost in the first round of his last three appearances at Indian Wells. Tiafoe’s efforts at the US Open, and indeed Wimbledon back in July where he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round, are testament to his best level coming on the big stage and this Masters event with capacity crowds should stir that in him. However, Benoit Paire is a tough man to put away in straight sets when on song and the Frenchman is likely to enjoy a likely feisty occasion here. Take Tiafoe to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
