THE LOWDOWN
World number 74 Andrea Petkovic won her first WTA title in six years back in August at the Winners Open in Romania after some hard work paying off over the summer. The German is a well-loved member of the tour with the ability to test anyone in flashes but her best form probably comes on the clay. She faces world number 43 Yulia Putintseva for an exciting first round draw, with the Kazakh also winning a WTA title in Romania this year in Budapest. The 26-year-old came agonisingly close to winning a third career title last week at the Astana Open, on home soil, but she lost from a set down to Alison Van Uytvanck in the final.
THE PREDICTION
34-year-old Petkovic has been in good form in places this season and the German claimed her first win over Yulia Putintseva at tour level this year back at the Hamburg Open to take this head-to-head to 3-1. Putintseva’s recent title disappointment at the Astana Open could cause a hangover into the first round of Indian Wells if she is not careful and that, with Petkovic’s three-set victory back in July, is enough to suggest taking the German to win at least a set here.
