World number 81 Amanda Anisimova is far better than her current WTA ranking and the 20-year-old should be watched carefully at Indian Wells as someone threatening to return to form. The American will be well-supported here as she was against Karolina Pliskova in the second round of the US Open last month, where she took a set off the world number three before a tight defeat via a deciding tiebreak. It has taken Pliskova (twice) and Elina Svitolina to oust her from her last three WTA tournaments and she will likely require a player either in excellent form or inside the top 40 to take her out in California. 17-year-old Katrina Scott has spent most of the season on the ITF circuit as she gathers experience and a wildcard to the first round here is a huge opportunity.
THE PREDICTION
Anisimova has faced world number 439 Scott before, coming back from a set down against the teenager to win their second round match at last season’s US Open. This will likely fall a little easier for Anisimova in better form this year but Scott is a Californian who will be well backed with so much hype surrounding young players right now. Anisimova in two sets is how this match should fall but an outright win is the safest option within an accumulator.
