World number 43 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina reached a career-high of 32nd earlier this season after reaching the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros. The 22-year-old was always going to find the transition from that high on clay to the grass and hardcourt season tough going but he will be disappointed with just four wins since June on tour. World number 86 Steve Johnson has struggled through a difficult year on tour, with the last of his four ATP titles coming back in 2018. Johnson reached a career-high 21st in the world back in 2016 but he has spent the majority of the last few years in the lower-half of the top 100.
THE PREDICTION
31-year-old Steve Johnson is Californian born and bred and he will be well-backed by the home crowd at Indian Wells, especially as part of a potentially exciting doubles partnership with Sam Querrey. Johnson and Querrey made the semi-finals of the US Open last month before losing to the eventual champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury. The American will give it a good go here but Davidovich Fokina’s level is high enough right now, despite recent disappointments, to win this first round match outright. The Spaniard won their only previous encounter last year at the Cologne Open 2, also on a hard court.
