THE PREDICTION
Seventh seed Jordan Thompson has conceded just six games across two matches so far this campaign in Newport, Rhode Island after a walkover in the first round and a thrashing of Yuichi Sugita on Wednesday. The Aussie is in excellent form on grass this season having reached the quarter-finals of now two tournaments both here and at the Mallorca Championships and the third round of Wimbledon. 27-year-old Thompson beat 12th seed Casper Rudd in five sets before ousting Kei Nishikori at SW19 but his efforts seemed to catch up with him by the third round. He has, however, clearly brought that form to the Hall of Fame Open and he could be a dark horse for a first ATP title this week. In his way is a potential banana skin in world number 155 Maxime Cressy, who took out top grass specialist Sam Querrey in three sets on Wednesday. World number 71 Thompson is unlikely to underestimate his tall American foe in this first meeting but take him as outright winner in case Cressy forces a decider.
