THE PREDICTION
World number 37 Alexander Bublik faced the unwelcome prospect of playing veteran powerhouse Ivo Karlovic at the Hall of Fame Open but he overcame the evergreen 42-year-old in three sets. Bublik actually served one more ace than Karlovic in a 22-21 battle from the baseline on Wednesday in what must have been a pretty unorthodox spectacle for the crowd. 24-year-old Bublik has enjoyed his time on grass this season, reaching the quarter-final of the Eastbourne International before his straight-sets victory over 18th seed Grigor Dimitrov at Wimbledon two weeks ago. The Kazakh should the overwhelming favourite to beat 32-year-old Jason Jung here as the first seed in Newport, Rhode Island but Bublik’s unpredictability means an outright pick is the wisest option. Jung beat an out-of-sorts Tennys Sandgren on Wednesday for one of his best results for some time but Bublik should be one step too many.
