THE PREDICTION
This is a huge opportunity for one of world number 135 Daniel Altmaier or number 97 Pedro Martinez to reach a rare ATP final after two excellent campaigns so far. 22-year-old Altmaier is targeting his first ever final at this level after an excellent July saw him also reach the semi-finals of the Umag Open last week. The German clearly favours the clay and fabulously stormed to the last 16 at last year’s Roland-Garros, beating Matteo Berrettini en-route there before defeat to Pablo Carreno Busta. This will be 24-year-old Martinez’ first ATP semi-final with a quarter-final placing at the ATP 500 Rio Open last year his best showing so far in a career occasionally threatening to break the ceiling into the top 50. The Spaniard has recently beaten Sebastian Korda and Gael Monfils at Grand Slams to show for his quality but this looks like the most important day of his career so far.
In a first meeting there is little to choose between them and both have taken out strong competitors this week with Altmaier ousting Laslo Djere and Martinez knocking out the second seed Roberto Bautista Agut. In what looks set to see a decider, take Altmaier to win at least one set here as the man in better overall form this month.
