THE PREDICTION
Kitzbuhel Open first seed Casper Ruud has had to work hard to reach the quarter-finals this week in Austria with two three-set wins so far over Mario Vilella Martinez and rising Swedish youngster Mikael Ymer. The world number 14 is fast establishing himself as one of the top five players in the world on clay having won three ATP titles this year on the surface and both of his last two at Bastad in Sweden and Gstaad in Switzerland, where he also won the Geneva Open last month. In a first meeting with world number 91 Arthur Rinderknech there is little to suggest that the quickly improving Frenchman can stop that run of 10 wins in a row reaching 11 but he has performed admirably this week so far. Four quarter-finals on tour this season and now this first ATP semi-final appearance show the 26-year-old is moving in the right direction and wins over Jannik Sinner, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Roberto Bautista Agut suggest he can make the top 50 sooner rather than later.
However, Ruud is a different class on clay right now and the Norwegian should be winning this in straight sets. His results so far this week suggest that taking him as outright is the wise, if cautious move though.
