THE PREDICTION
37-year-old Philipp Kohlschreiber won the battle of the veterans against Fernando Verdasco on Tuesday, coming through in four sets against the Spaniard as if he had never been away. That was the German’s second match, and first win, on tour this season but he looked in great shape and could be a handful for world number 26 Aslan Karatsev here. 27-year-old Karatsev lost their previous meeting in three sets back in 2015 but since then, in fact since just this year, the Russian has exploded into the top 30. This will be a far tougher experience than his first round match against young Jenson Brooksby but Karatsev has shown enough form on clay this season to warrant a straight-sets pick here. Kohlschreiber is an intelligent opponent and might work out the Russian’s unorthodox game in time to snatch the third so you could opt for Karatsev to win the first set instead or simply as outright victor.
