THE PREDICTION
Italy’s Salvatore Caruso is riding a four-match losing streak on the clay circuit stretching back to a first round win at the Monte-Carlo Masters, and only just then against Monegasque wildcard Lucas Catarina. The 28-year-old beat James Duckworth in their only previous meeting over four sets at the US Open on a surface both players seem more comfortable on but his questionable form leaves the door open for the Aussie here. This is only 29-year-old Duckworth’s second clay match this season, and first at tour level, after a poor loss to Raul Brancaccio in the Emilia-Romagna qualifiers last week so this match looks like it could twist and turn towards a winner either way. Caruso is the likelier winner here so you could take the Italian as outright but if there is an option for over three sets in this match it would be wiser to take that.
