This should be an entertaining first round match between world number nine Matteo Berrettini and number 113 Taro Daniel after the pair played their second career meeting just over a month ago in the semi-finals of the Serbia Open. 28-year-old Daniel had come back from obscurity through the qualifiers to go on a sudden run in Belgrade, beating the likes of John Millman and Federico Delbonis and taking a set off Berrettini before defeat. Whilst he has since failed to reach those heights it is clear that the Japanese has been more confident in recent weeks on the Challenger circuit and he has a chance at snatching a set here. However, the likeliest outcome for this first round match is that in-form Matteo Berrettini, eventual winner of that Serbia Open last month and runner-up at the Madrid Masters, starts his Roland-Garros campaign off with a flourish. The Italian should be targeting the quarter-finals here as a rare big-server with a proper game for the clay and he can take this in three competitive sets.
