THE PREDICTION
35-year-old Pablo Cuevas recently came into some strong form on his favoured surface by reaching the semi-finals of the Geneva Open last week, losing in the semi-finals to Denis Shapovalov. The Uruguayan has won six ATP titles on clay and would be a tough first round tie for anybody in Paris, though this is a really intriguing second meeting with Lucas Pouille. The Frenchman is on the road back from a long injury lay-off and has been careful with his calendar so far this season with a round of 16 defeat by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at the Monte-Carlo Masters his best showing in 2021. 27-year-old Pouille was the winner in the quarter-final of Monte-Carlo four years ago when he last played Cuevas, though at the height if his powers there. This is a tough one to call but Cuevas’ recent form suggests taking him to win at least a set here is a solid option.
