THE PREDICTION
This should be a vastly enjoyable all-French affair between world number 141 Hugo Gaston and number 53 Richard Gasquet, with fans likely unable to fully back one or the other here after the younger Frenchman’s exploits last season. Whilst 34-year-old Gasquet is a hero around these parts, 20-year-old Gaston’s first Roland-Garros experience last year was simply incredible as he beat former champion Stan Wawrinka over five sets to reach the round of 16 before Dominic Thiem eventually ousted him, also in five. Since then Gaston has enjoyed some success on the Challenger circuit but he should step up to become a handful here for Gasquet, whose silky playstyle has earned him fierce fans everywhere but especially in his homeland. The crowd will not want this match to stop, and fluctuating support for both players could see this go all the way, so take over three sets here if that is an option but otherwise take Gaston to win at least a set.
