This could be a real battle of a first meeting between Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori and American Mackenzie McDonald and a result looks like guesswork at this stage. 22-year-old Ruusuvuori showed his great potential earlier this year by beating Gael Monfils at the Australian Open and then Alexander Zverev at the Miami Open but he has struggled to make a dent on the clay swing so far. 26-year-old McDonald is similarly more comfortable on a hard court but, whilst Ruusuvuori is significantly higher-ranked, McDonald can often perform above his supposed ability at Grand Slams. For a player you can often find in and around the top 120 in the ATP world rankings, McDonald’s two round of 16 finishes at Wimbledon 2018 and this year’s Australian Open suggest the five-set format suits him to a tee and that could be the deciding factor here. If there is an option for over three sets, take that. If not, take McDonald to win at least a set in this intriguing first round clash.
