THE PREDICTION
This second round clash at the Citi Open has an old-school ring to it as world number three Rafael Nadal faces the returning Jack Sock for a sixth time in their careers. Nadal has predictably won all five previous meetings with the hard-hitting American but they have shared some battles over the years with both players taking sets in three of those meetings. 35-year-old Nadal received a bye through to this stage in Washington but has not played competitively on a hard court since the quarter-finals of the Australian Open back in February. These days the Spaniard can occasionally be found out on hard courts but it should take a tougher test than Jack Sock to shock him this week, despite the 28-year-old’s resurgence. Sock has spent much of the season on the Challenger circuit but two quarter-finals on home soil in Newport and Atlanta over the last month is impressive stuff.
Nadal comes to North America with a point to prove after losing at Roland-Garros for the first time since 2016 but there is enough uncertainty in this match-up to suggest the wise, cautious approach. Take the Spaniard to win outright here, with Sock capable of forcing a decider.
