This is an intriguing first meeting between world number 103 Denis Kudla and number 89 Brandon Nakashima as the latter’s impressive rise up the ranks continues. 19-year-old Nakashima has reached back-to-back finals this month, losing to Cam Norrie at the Los Cabos Open and John Isner in Atlanta on Sunday, as he continues to improve with unerring speed. Both players have taken out tough foes so far but Nakashima’s defeat of sixth seed Dan Evans, albeit with the Brit playing his first match since contracting covid-19, is the stand-out. Kudla enjoyed an excellent grass season and the 28-year-old remains one of the great enigmas on tour but it is hard to see him navigating a way past the youngster in this bold, brash form.
