World number 107 Mackenzie McDonald is having one of the best weeks of his career right now after putting out the Citi Open reigning champion Nick Kyrgios in the first round and going from strength to strength. The 26-year-old has put out Kyrgios, Benoit Paire and now in-form Ilya Ivashka to reach a rare quarter-final and both he and world number 103 Denis Kudla have a huge opportunity to reach the last four of an ATP 500 event. 28-year-old Kudla overcame a tough assault from 19-year-old Brandon Nakashima to add to his own list of brilliant results this week and this match should be a thriller with both players in such electric form.
Kudla and McDonald have met each other five times on the Challenger circuit but this quarter-final is a huge occasion for their first ever tour-level match. McDonald has won three of those Challenger meetings and after his exploits this week in Washington it is hard to not see him as the slightest of favourites to come through. Kudla is always capable of upping his game though, so take McDonald to win at least a set here as the likeliest of two capable winners.
