World number 107 Mackenzie McDonald is officially enjoying the best week of his tennis career so far after reaching a first ATP final at the Citi Open in Washington. The 26-year-old has always been something of an enigma on tour as someone who performs much better at Grand Slams, with a few round of 16 places behind him already, but this three-set format campaign has been nothing short of exemplary. McDonald beat the reigning champion from 2019, Nick Kyrgios, in the first round and then bettered that in many respects by defeating former world number four Kei Nishikori in the semi-finals on Saturday. The American has always shown glimpses but it will be fascinating to see, no matter what happens in this final, if he can finally maintain this level for a significant period of time.
A first meeting final is always exciting and world number 24 Jannik Sinner comes in as the solid favourite after rediscovering his confidence in Washington. A Men’s Doubles victory in Atlanta last week alongside Reilly Opelka has helped hugely with the Italian’s mini summer crisis and the 19-year-old should go on to challenge for a place in the top 10 by the end of this season in this form. Sinner beat another bright young upstart in Jenson Brooksby in the semi-finals to reach the final here without dropping a set. He has two ATP titles to his name already and that experience should serve him well against McDonald, despite how well the American has played. Take Sinner to lift the trophy here but in terms of what this week has done for their respective careers, both players are winners in Washington.
