Second seed Garbine Muguruza has led a charmed life this week in Chicago having received a bye to the second round and a walkover in the round of 16. The world number nine has taken out two inferior opponents in Ann Li and Mai Hontama comfortably and that should leave her with plenty in the tank, if a little rusty against top opposition. World number 41 Marketa Vondrousova will provide a true test after an excellent campaign has seen her oust Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and in-form players Danielle Collins and Jil Teichmann.

Muguruza conceded just the one game to Vondrousova in their only previous meeting back in February, also a semi-final at the Yarra Valley Classic, but this should be a much tighter affair. 22-year-old Vondrousova has taken out some serious competition this week and she will be all the more battle-hardened than Muguruza after the Spaniard’s easy route through. Take the Czech to win at least a set or for this match to need a decider and leave the winner up to chance.
