World number 16 Ons Jabeur was in control against Elena Rybakina before the fifth seed was forced to retire in the semi-final on Saturday. Jabeur is chasing records now as she aims to become the first Arab to reach the WTA Finals at the end of the season and she will be a danger both here and at Indian Wells with that motivation. World number nine Garbine Muguruza has led a charmed life this week in Chicago after a second walkover in the space of two rounds saw her avoid Marketa Vondrousova on Saturday. The Spaniard has reached the final with just four sets of tennis played and she will have to use all her experience to prep for a final she is coming in a little cold for.
This should be a highly enjoyable final between two of the more exciting players on the WTA tour and if their last meeting in the third round at Wimbledon is anything to go by. Jabeur was the winner in three sets back in July but their head-to-head record stands at 1-1 with another three-set victory for Muguruza on a hard court last season. Muguruza’s experience in finals makes her the favourite here on prestige but Jabeur won her first WTA title this summer and the Tunisian has been in the better form overall. Take Jabeur to win at least a set here in a match that looks destined for a decider.
