THE PREDICTION
World number 71 Camila Giorgi has been threatening a run like this all summer long and after taking out a mightily impressive Jessica Pegula in the semi-finals she is one win away from a first Masters title. The 29-year-old has beaten the ninth and seventh seed this week in Elise Mertens and Petra Kvitova, respectively, but now faces her toughest opponent in fourth seed Karolina Pliskova. The world number six beat Aryna Sabalenka in a semi-final for the second time in less than a month on Saturday, having also ousted the fiery Belarussian at Wimbledon to reach the final. Pliskova, also 29, has the experience here as a former Masters champion having won the Italian Open title in 2019.
This is hugely intriguing as a WTA 1000 final with Camila Giorgi on the precipice of the result of her career if she can beat Pliskova for the third time this year. Karolina Pliskova leads their head-to-head record 4-3 in matches played at tour level and 3-2 on hard courts but the Italian has beaten her twice within the last two months at the Eastbourne International and Olympic Games in Tokyo. Pliskova remains the favourite by her stature but this could be very close indeed. Take the Czech to win at least a set here in what looks like needing a decider.
