World number 30 Jessica Pegula continues to impress on her return to form this week in Montreal with huge wins over the likes of Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Danielle Collins and most recently coming back from a set down to beat Ons Jabeur in the quarter-finals. The 27-year-old is at her very best on hard courts and should be considered a dark horse for the US Open title next month in this form as one of the toughest players on the WTA tour to beat into submission when she is in this mood. World number 71 Camila Giorgi is almost the opposite in some respects as a player who relies on rhythm and control more than most. When the 29-year-old finds her groove she makes some of the best shots around as a deceptively hard hitter and this week at the Canada Masters she has beaten top seeds in Elise Mertens, Petra Kvitova and Cocoa Gauff most recently on Friday.
Pegula actually won her only WTA title to date at the hands of Camila Giorgi in their last meeting at the Washington Open, almost exactly this time two years ago. The American leads their head-to-head record 3-1 coming into this semi-final and she has consistently battled through this campaign as an underdog. This is a really difficult pick but taking Pegula to win at least a set is a reasonable option as even in defeat she can often be counted on to grab one.
