THE PREDICTION
Newly-promoted world number three Stefanos Tsitsipas has ultimately enjoyed a successful year on tour so far, reflective in his new career-high ranking, and yet he will probably feel disappointed by his own standards. The Greek lost his first Grand Slam final from two sets up against Novak Djokovic at Roland-Garros back in June and then subsequently lost his next match in the first round of Wimbledon. More recently, he could not grab a medal for Greece at Tokyo 2020 in either the Singles or Doubles alongside an equally disappointed Maria Sakkari after so much hype. As a player who wears his losses on his sleeves, certainly more so than his wins, we could see a slightly reserved second seed here in Toronto and this first match will do nothing to help his chances.
World number 27 Ugo Humbert knocked Tsitsipas out of the Olympics less than two weeks ago in the third round to lead their head-to-head record 2-0, having also beaten the Greek in three at last year’s Paris Masters. The Frenchman is an excellent talent and likely future top 10 but his hold over Tsitsipas is pretty remarkable considering the world number three’s ability. 23-year-old Humbert was solid in beating Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets on Monday to set-up this behemoth of a second round match and he will be confident of making it three wins from three against Tsitsipas. Take Humbert to win at least a set here as the likelier of two very capable winners and try to catch this blockbuster if you can.
