THE PREDICTION
World number 55 Kei Nishikori lost in the semi-finals of the Washington Open last week to an inspired performance from Mackenzie McDonald but Nishikori will know he needs to get better. The 31-year-old is targeting a return to the top 20, which is not wholly unattainable, but he needs to put more matches away after another three-set slog against Miomir Kecmanovic on Tuesday in Toronto was less than convincing. This is a hugely tough second round draw against world number 13 Hubert Hurkacz, who recently made the semi-finals of Wimbledon after beating Roger Federer in straight sets. However, Hurkacz has a recent history for dips in form after huge success. He went on a long losing streak after winning the Miami Open back in April and lost to Liam Broady at the Olympic Games last time out in one of his worst results of the year.
24-year-old Hurkacz leads their head-to-head record 2-0 at this stage with two wins against the Japanese star in 2019 at the Dubai Open and Indian Wells, both on hard courts. Both matches saw three sets required before Hurkacz went on to win and with the Pole not fully up to speed, and Nishikori’s excellent ability to stick in a match, taking this third meeting to see three sets looks a useful option here.
