World number 30 John Isner recently won a seventh Atlanta Open title and the 36-year-old brought that five-match winning streak through to the Canada Masters by beating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets on Tuesday. The big-serving veteran has enjoyed a largely successful year on tour as he continues to play a reduced calendar but this will be a tough second round test against a player he has never beaten in world number 20 Cristian Garin. 24-year-old Garin leads their head-to-head record 2-0 having beaten Isner twice in 2019 in two second round Masters matches, the first here in Toronto and the second at the Paris Masters later that year. Both matches fell in straight sets to the Chilean who enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2019 but this match is likely to be closer with Isner in resurgent form and Garin last playing in July. Take Isner to win at least a set here as the likelier of two capable winners and you can add a tiebreak for good measure.
